In this work, Mickey Mouse is reimagined through the lens of Renaissance portraiture. Draped in fur-lined robes and crowned in gold, the familiar icon is elevated to the status of monarch, echoing the grandeur of noble portraits from the 15th–17th centuries.

The painting draws a playful parallel between the cultural rebirth of the European Renaissance and the so-called “Disney Renaissance” of the late 20th century, when films like The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast revived and redefined animation. At the same time, it acknowledges Mickey’s dual role in cultural memory: once a mischievous entertainer and comic trickster, he now also stands as the crowned emblem of Disney’s vast creative empire. In this way, Mickey reigns both as jester and king.

About the Artist

Born and raised in Chicago, I developed a love for both fine art and storytelling at an early age. This dual passion led me to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where I initially pursued painting but soon became equally fascinated with animation. Studying both at the same time, I found an ongoing dialogue between the two - drawing inspiration from the expressive possibilities of animation while grounding my practice in the technical depth and tradition of painting.

My work often moves between realism and surrealism, using each to explore the tension between the familiar and the imagined. Acrylic and oil paint are my primary mediums, though I love to experiment with different styles and techniques. I aim to create work that reflects both a painter’s eye and an animator’s sense of motion, storytelling, and wonder.
