This life-size sculpture of a mother elephant and her calf was inspired by the powerful bond and quiet communication that elephants share. I’ve always been moved by their gentle strength, their loyalty to family, and the way a mother guides her young with both protection and tenderness. I wanted to capture that moment of connection, one that feels timeless and universally understood.
I carved this piece from Savanna Marble, a stone I chose for its warm, natural tones and the beautiful marbling that echoes the texture and spirit of the African landscape. Working with this material is both challenging and deeply rewarding. The entire form was shaped by hand using a hammer and chisel, a slow and meditative process that allowed me to build the contours and emotion into the stone.
Once the carving was complete, I refined and polished the surface using machine tools to bring out the stone’s natural patterns and give the elephants their smooth, lifelike finish. The combination of hand carving and machine polishing allowed me to honor both tradition and precision, resulting in a piece that feels alive with movement and presence.

About the Artist

My name is Michael Moyowachena, an artist from Zimbabwe whose passion for art began at a young age. Growing up in the villages of Zimbabwe, I was surrounded by the natural beauty and cultural richness that continue to inspire my work today. Over the years, this early admiration for art has grown into a dedicated practice of transforming raw stone into expressive, meaningful sculptures.
